Parking for day trip to Trieste

We are picking up our daughter at TRS airport on a Thursday in August and will spend the night nearby. On Friday we will visit the Trieste area for the day and then spend the night in Dutovlje, Slovenia. We will have a rental car.

We plan to see the following while in the Trieste area:
• Botanical Garden of the Karst
• Rilke Trail
• Trieste walking tour
• Enjoy cafes and coffee

And finally to my question. What would you suggest for parking the car while in Trieste center city? Should we just locate a parking garage downtown or is it preferable to park outside the city and take public transport to the city center?

Thank you for your input on parking or recommendations on any "not-to-be-missed" Trieste day trip sites.

I found this paid parking option in the city center, but didn't use it as we parked at our hotel:

About a 25 minute drive from there are the Lipica Stud Farms. We enjoyed not only the tour, but also wandering the grounds. You can also watch ring practice. Check their schedule as events are not daily.

Make sure you are allowed to take the rental car out of Italy

All drivers must have an IDP
Watch out for ZTLs in the city center

We plan to get our IDL (for the first time ever on a European car rental!) since Slovenian police apparently often want to see it. We will also drive in Italy, Croatia, and Austria, which is fine with the rental agency but I know we need some form of toll vignette for each country.
