We will be staying in Chianti and plan to make a day trip to Florence. I know driving in Florence is a nightmare, but where can we park just for the day and walk from there? Or any other ideas?
Don't know if you picked your place to stay in Chianti country. There are buses that make the trip every day, but you'd have ask locally where and what routes they travel and get a schedule. I confess I have looked on line and have not done well figuring out bus schedules. Here is a quote from Florence tourism web page: "There are buses, the LI-NEA and the ATAF that provide ample ways to get around Florence and also to get to outlying areas of Tuscany."
Actually we have a house in Casole d'Elsa and I was too lazy to type that out last night. I will check in with the tourism office.
There is underground parking at Santa Maria Novella train station and overhead signs that let you know space availability. I have never had any luck on finding a space there and usually park on the street at Fortezza del Basso. Near the Accademia and doesn't require too much stressful driving. Standard parking scheme: find an empty spot and park, pay at the central meter, place the receipt on the dash showing when you parked and how much time you paid for. Fifteen minute walk to the Duomo from there.
