Parking car in Orvieto

Hello All,

Will be in Italy at the end of September, after Rome I’ll rent a car at Rome’s airport and go north.

First stop Orvieto and then to Assisi to sleep there.
We’ll be traveling 4 in one car with carry-ons and back packs. The idea is to stop in Orvieto, see the old town and have lunch ending the day in Assisi. To see the old town in Orvieto we’ll have to leave the car parked below or park somewhere up in the old town.
My question is, how safe is to leave a car parked there with our luggage? Rick Steves’ Italy’s book remain us to be careful with our belongings and if something happens with them at this stage of the trip will ruin our whole trip.
On the other hand this is a small town not a big city like Rome where we have to be more careful with this things.

Other option is go all the way to Assisi, leave our belongings at the hotel, then go to Orvieto and back to Assisi at the end of the day. That could work but is too much back and forth taking time from site seeing.

Has anyone of you done this? What has been your experience?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I would worry about leaving my belongings in the car, especially at the beginning of a trip. Perhaps, there is a parking lot with some kind of security? You could also consider taking the train to Orvieto, spend the night and pick up a car in Orvieto and proceed to Assisi..

There are several parking lots, both down at the station (across the tracks), up at the funicular upper station or the multi story on via Roma, but the only security is some security cameras, which we know provide no security. Theft in a small towns like Orvieto is probably rare, but nevertheless nobody can guarantee your belongings will be safe. At the very least take valuable items with you, and spread all the belongings in the trunk rather than keeping them inside suitcases, to make it harder to run away with a bag quickly.

Don't fret! Here is a solution. Last October, we parked our car in a big parking lot outside the Orvieto "centro storico" and stored our luggage for a few hours in the Welcome Point. After we parked our car, we walked about a hundred metres to the Welcome Point with our luggage, stored it, then walked into Orvieto. Very simple.
