We are renting a car when leaving Rome and will be stopping at Pompeii on our way south. Any advice about parking near the ruins? Also thinking of hiring a guide. Is it reasonable to do that on sight?

There is a huge public parking lot. Don't know the fee. We used a guide. First, spend some time talking with guide to see what he is offering and judging his English skills at the same time. We had one for about two hours that was great. The advantage to the guide over the head phones is that you get to ask questions and can move in any direction at anytime. Far better understanding of everything.
