Paris to Rome in February

This is the website I have found for a sleeper train: http://www.eurorailways.com/products/night_trains/paris_to_rome.htm Here are my options as I see it: OPTION 1 > Sleeper Train First Class (First Class is the only way for privacy on a sleeper train) would cost 2 of us about $800. (14 hours total travel on 2 trains departing at 7:45pm) I do like a little more time in Paris AND far less hassle going from center of Paris to center of Rome. OPTION 2 > Flight plus Taxi PLUS one more night in a Rome Hotel would cost $500 to $600. (7 hours of total travel time beginning around 11am) OPTION 3 > Day train leaving early in the morning and arriving around 8pm. PLUS one more night in a Rome Hotel would cost about $800. Option 1 looks good to me but I was hoping to spend a little less. Any possibilities? Also, suggestions for Rome hotel and restaurants and things to do are welcome. Is a day trip to Assissi by train or bus reasonable? UPDATE: I just found
http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm?topic=45668 answering my question about a day trip to Assissi. Looks like it is doable.

I've had good luck using Easyjet to travel between major cities on the cheap. I don't know your travel date, but a quick search for airfare using Easyjet between Paris and Rome produced several options ranging between 40-80 Euros per ticket. You would have to pay extra for baggage but your total cost would still be much lower than $600. Also, it is very easy to take the train into the center of Rome from Fiumicino Airport. My husband and I enjoyed staying at Hotel Trastevere while visiting Rome. There were many great restaurants in the Trastevere neighborhood as well, such as La Scala. Enjoy your trip!

do not take the overnight train. It is horrible. At least it was a few years ago when I did it. I recommend the plane as well, being that the transportation is very easy to get into Rome.
Look at kayak.com (they bring in ryanair and easyjet pricing into their search) As for hotels and such- Trastevere (the place mentioned above) is amazing for that "back road" of Rome feel. The restaurants are amazing out there. I lived there for a while (in Trastevere) Another good place, more on the other side of the river is the Daphne Inn. I have stayed there on a few visits to Rome and have found that the service is amazing. Upon your arrival they will sit down with you and help you plan your trip, book things. If this is your first time to Rome- I recommend doing this.

I'm not familiar with the website you found. They are not the sellers or providers of the product. The product is a new venture replacing one which ceased operation. There is very little feedback yet. A very reliable source of accurate information on the Paris Italy corridor is The Man in Seat 61 and I advise you to have a read there. I've used night trains previously. I don't do it any longer because I don't find them comfortable enough nor do I sleep well on them. I'd read carefully Seat61's comparison of the various sleeping compartments. I'd fly....

Fly. We're going Paris to Rome in February and booked our tix on EasyJet a couple months ago. It was something like 40€. Prices have surely gone up as seats have been sold, but it can't be worse than the estimated cost for the train.
