Trenitalia's website allows to book online: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
Easyjet, Vueling and Meridiana offer low cost flights if you are traveling light. Extra baggage will bump up the price of these flights.
If you book on the Trenitalis site, you can only pick up tickets in Italy. Obviously that won't work in this case.
If you book well in advance (up t0 90 days) at www.voyages-sncf.com, you can get PREM'S (discount) fares as low as €35 for a bunk in a six-person couchette and €60 for a bunk in a four-person couchette. Paying a little extra for the four-bunk couchette is well worth it for the extra space and comfort. There are also sleepers, but they are qute a bit more expensive.
Click on the British flag on the SNCF site for English. Leave France as the default country and do NOT choose cancellation insurance. You can print PREM'S tickets yourself for domestic routes, but you must choose to have them mailed to an address in France (like your Paris hotel) for international routes. Officially, SNCF does not mail tickets to North America. If you buy a regular fare ticket, you'll be given the option of picking it up at a station or SNCF boutique.
