Papal audiences

What is the lowdown on Papal audiences?

We are traveling with a religious & Spanish speaking couple for their first trip to Italy. I would love it if we could bring them to a papal audience that was a smaller group than the one I have heard of that is open to the public.

Thanks

If you were hoping for a more private audience, I think you need to be pretty far up in the Catholic hierarchy (or a celebrity) to warrant that. But here are a few links that explain the various papal audiences. You might want to go for a private tour of the Vatican, which might be interesting to the couple.

That said, the papal audience for the public is very interesting and can be very motivating. I was there in 1997 and sitting very very far back with a couple from the US that I had met while going through the metal detector. However, when the pope-mobile came out with the pope, it suddenly turned and came down our row (we were sitting in the first row of our section). The woman and I both jumped from our seats and leaned forward holding our hands out. When he got to us, he touched both of our hands. We were so stunned we were speechless. One of the Swiss Guards came over and laughing, said, "So, you will never wash those hands again, eh?" It really was an incredible experience. So you never know... :-)

Send in your Papal Audience invitation request early. On the day of the ceremony, get there early for a good seat (60 to 90 minutes ahead). The locations are all distant from the ceremonial chair, so try to get a middle section seat, front row. The Pope will get driven by the main rows a few times. Everyone will stand up when he goes by. Get in a spot where no one can stand up in front of you. Bring a hat and water, as it was sunny the day of my visit. There are rest rooms in the building on the left side, when facing the stage. The Pope stopped right by me to kiss a baby handed to him. I have that on video. Very memorable.
