Pantheon to Vatican? Train station? Colosseum?

The apartment we are renting in Rome is right next to the Pantheon. Google walk says the Colosseum is 20 mins away but the walk to the Vatican is double that. What would be the best way to get to the Vatican from the Pantheon? How about from the Panethon to FCO. We have an 11 am flight on the day we leave (Monday).

Thanks for the info. I peeked at that site and it's a bit overwhelming at first but I'll go back and work through it for each of my days in Rome.

From Largo Argentina (bus stop is in front of the book store), both the #40 and #64 bus will get you to the Vatican. Get off at last stop for #40 and first stop after the tunnel for #64. The walk is long, but would be interesting on a nice day. I'd take a route that passes by Castel Sant'Angelo rather than the route the bus takes. I believe there's a bus from Largo Argentina that stops near the Colosseum. Check the ATAC website (www.atac.roma.it) or just look at the signs once you're there. You would catch a bus to the Colosseum on the other side of the street from the Vatican bus, either just to the right after you cross or just ahead along the tram tracks (most if not all buses stop at both). I've walked Largo Argentina to Colosseum, and it seems longer than 20 minutes. The walk also requires you to cross a couple of very busy streets around Piazza Venezia.

For the Vatican, you can walk 5 minutes to Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle II and take bus #40 from Largo di Torre Argentina to Piazza San Pietro. Then it is a 5 minute walk to St. Peters. To get to the Vatican Museums, you go to the Senato stop, behind Piazza Navona and take a #492. You might want to get acquainted with Www.atac.it, the transportation website for Rome. It is really quite good and there is an English site. For departure at FCO, personally I would spring for a cab. Romecabs guarantees 50€ door to terminal 5. The Leonardo Express does not take you to T5. You can reserve with Romecabs on their website.

If money is not an issue for you, taking a taxi is your best option. We took a taxi from our hotel which is way out of the site areas and it only cost about 20-30 euros for all 3 of us and the taxi driver was hilarious. I would rather spend more money and make an Italian friend then worry about getting off at the wrong stop. We also walked everywhere and we are big people. We had not problems.

We live near the Vatican, and we take bus #492 from Piazza Risorgimento, right next to Via di Porta Angelica, the road that leads you to the Vatican. You can pick this bus up from Corso del Rinascimento to the Vatican, a 3 minute walk from the Pantheon. Buses are easy in Rome. The stop you are at is listed at the top, so you find yours on the list underneath, and make sure the stop you want to go to is below yours. Get off at Crescenzio/Risorgimento, about the 8th stop, or ask the bus driver after you cross the bridge for the Vatican stop. Buses in Rome can be very slow, depending on the traffic. We can walk from the Pantheon to the Vatican in less than 20 minutes, any good map can get you there. The ride at 7pm from the Pantheon to the Vatican for us on a Wednesday night can take up to 40 minutes. So, if you have the time, I would walk and take in the sights: ). If not, the bus is your best bet, the metro lines are not close to either location. As for the airport, we always use airportshuttle.it. The cost is 43Eu total to the airport, and they are always on time and professional. Good luck and I hope this helps you decide what you want to do: )

Taxi is a great option. We stayed near the Pantheon in April. We took the bus to the Vatican and honestly felt like it was a hassle. Then we were shocked when we jumped in a cab on the way back and it was so close and half the time. For us, the extra expense was worth the convenience.

A good middle ground cost wise is a shared shuttle. You hotel can set it up. IF it is a DIRECT flight to the US then you need to use T-5 and be there around 8 AM. If it is connecting flight to somewhere else in Europe and then to the US you will need T-3 and 9 AM should be fine. Check that carefully since going to T-5 is a pain.

Yes, get tickets for an early entrance to the Vatican Museum and take a taxi from your apartment. The taxi can let you off at the main entrance to the museum. We took the taxi several times last summer and never had a problem and the drivers helped me with my Italian pronunciation!

Bob, When you say leave Rome at 7am you mean we need a taxi at the apartment at 7am? I have no idea how the traffic will be Monday morning but I'm assuming your implying it's 2 hours to get from the Pantheon to FCO? We are flying American from Rome to Chicago.

Leaving your apartment at 0700 should be plenty of time for your 1100 flight. We took Rome Cabs last week and they were GREAT. You can reserve on-line http://www.romecabs.com/ with no prepay required. They will pick you up promptly at your place of lodging and take you to T5 for 50 euros.
