Pantheon Inn or Locando San Pancrazio

We'll be in Rome for a week and are wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra $$ to stay smack in the center. Any opinions about the Pantheon Inn (200 euros/center of town) or Locando San Pancrazio (170 euros in the Trastevere area on a quiet street a little removed). Has anyone stayed at either? Any thoughts about the two areas? Thanks!

Just got back from Italy and we spend the a few nights in Hotel Triano. They took very good care of us and I enjoy staying there. It is on the main road and the sounds did not bother my family.

I think Joan means Hotel Traiano (Trajan), very centrally located. Traffic is heavy in Rome, so being in the center where you can walk from place to place is a good idea. Trastevere is great, but I prefer the Pantheon area. Other good places for hotels are Campo dei Fiori or the hotels along Via Nazionale (although check reviews before you book).

The Pantheon/Navonna area provides a short walk to many of the piazze, sites, restaurants, sandwich places, pizza, gelato etc., that you will walk to, from Trastevere. If I stayed in Trastevere for a week, I would walk to the Pantheon, Navonna Cmp d Fiori areas many times. If I stayed in the Pantheon/Navonna area I would walk to Trastevere maybe once or twice in that week. The delta, €30 per night times 6(?) nights, = €180. That's not spare change. I would ask myself, how often, after a great night in Fiori, or Navonna or Spagna, am I going to feel: "jeeze I've got to walk all the way back to my Trastevere hotel up that hill?" If I did feel that way, would I spend ~$44 that night to avoid that walk? Another factor is that after a long day of being of a tourist, I return to my hotel to shower and change, and then go out for the evening. That would add more round trips to/from Trastevere unless Trastevere is my night venue.

Of the two, the Pantheon area is more convenient. In many ways the Trastevere area is more than a little removed. It is a lovely area but an area to itself. If it is your first trip than stay in the Pantheon area. On our four visit to Rome we always stay in the Termini area just for the convenience to public transit and walking distances are not too bad.

Thanks everyone...all very helpful. This will be our second time in Rome. We stayed before at Albergo del Senato, which is in the perfect location. But, we thought we might find something less expensive in other areas. But, I tend to agree that the Pantheon area might most convenient. Albergo del Senato is great but at 350 euro per night...ugh! I'm tempted to wait until we get there and see what their rates are for last minute. Crazy???
