Panorama to Zallingerhutte hike — Do you recommend? With only 1 day to hike in Dolomites?

Panorama to Zallingerhutte: “This hike comes with fine vistas, changes of scenery (meadows, woods and high valleys), huts with cold and hot eating options, and lifts up and down on each end. Allow 5-6 hours”
I’m on the RS My Way Alpine Europe Tour in July, with only 1 full day available for hiking. Please give me feedback on choosing a hike! My son and I are in moderately good shape, so I anticipate choosing a moderate difficulty hike.

In Ortisei, you either take a gondola up to a mountain ringed meadow from Ortisei or a funicular to the same on the other side of the valley. Both were breathtaking, had huts with food, fabulous experiences for us. I don’t know where your goes or where you are staying but if near Ortisei these are fabulous.

Is that the description from Rick’s book? You might also look at this blog by Laurel, a forum member (and author of of the hiking book shown in the photo).

I do not have personal experience with the hike, but I have long wanted to go and stay at the Zallinger farm, and admire their Tyrolian horses (Haflingers).

Another hike you could do would be to the Bolzanohuette/Schlernhaus from Compatsch. This one we have done. I believe it is also in Rick’s book. It may be more difficult than the Zallinger hike (not sure), but the views from the top are incredible. And we hiked among horses, not cows, for a change.

Suki — I think our RS tour will be staying in Castelrotto, but I won’t know for certain until 1 month before the tour starts. I will check the map and follow up on your tip on Ortisei. Thanks!

Lola - yes indeed, that’s the description from the RS book. Thank you for the link to Laurel’s blog! And I will definitely look into your suggestion of Bolzanohuette/Schlernhaus from Compatsch.

We did that hike 5 years ago when we were on the My Way Alpine tour. It is just as described, with a variety of scenery. We were in our early 60's, and managed just fine. We stopped at one hut for lunch, and another for a beer, and to fill our water bottles. Your tour leader will fill you in on the hiking and transport options. That was our first trip to Europe, and is still our favorite tour. Would have liked to stay in the Dolomites longer!
