we will be in Siena on July 2nd and want to take in the Palio. I am looking at advice on how to get the most out of our day taking in the Palio. We will be leaving on the 3rd to Rome.
Most of your day will be spent being crushed within a huge mob if you want to stand in the campo. I don't know how to make reservations on the different balconies that line most of the compo. It is a wild event. My daughter went several years ago. She was in her 30s and doesn't plan to do that again. It is exciting the several days before because they are hanging their banners all over town, there is excitement in the air. But as a tourist, I would stay away. It's crazy .....
thank you for your advise - to avoid. We enjoy local festivals and just want to know any advice on how to experience it.
The palio is tremendous fun! I wouldn't stand inside the campo but there is an entrance right by the starting line, you'll see best from there. Check it out a few times before the 2nd and then get there early to stake your claim. The days running up to the race are great too. Every day there are marching groups from the different neighborhoods, flag throwers practicing and trial runs with the horses. Doesn't matter your age, this is something you won't find any place else!!!!
Enjoy yourselves !
Don't miss it.
It's an opportunity of a lifetime.
