We will arrive in Florence on July 1 and found out the Palio race in Siena is July 2. Is it crazy to think we could take the first express bus in the morning to Siena to see the parade? I'm not expecting to get anywhere near the race. Can we purchase tickets ahead of time? I'm trying to find bus information but was just checking if any of you have been there and maybe think this is a possible.

You can also take the train-if the bus is full. Takes a bit longer than the bus, but the train doesn’t have to deal with traffic (which on that day will be heavy especially coming back from Siena).
You can still get inside the ring of the race until minutes before the race starts. Then a little before the race starts they close access to the ring in the middle.

if you have a chance to attend go for it. something you love and talk about for a long time. few years back we were in venice and had the chance to attend the annual wine festival in bardolino on lake garda, and we still talk about it today. was so much fun meeting people from all over, eating drinking and being merry. you'll enjoy the day.
