We're still basking of the glow of yesterday's INCREDIBLE Palio. It helps that we're still in Siene staying just down the lane from the winning contrada - the Unicorn!! We were fortunate to have balcony seats (through www.initaly.com)- ok, we're old and couldn't stand for 4 hours in the Campo - but have some tips for Rick's younger travelers....
Get to the Compo by 3pm and stake out your spot near the railing. Bring an umbrella for shade. Best place to be - as you stand in front of the fountain - go to the left. ALL the contradas stop there for flag throwing and the race starts there too. Next best place is near the fountain.
Do NOT drink wine - it get HOT and young folks were passing out like flies. From 4:30ish on you have to stand up as tons of tourists come in the ONE open door to the Palio which is to the right of the Tower as you face it.
Water is for sale but bring your own. Bathrooms are scarce and you loose your place if you have to go.
IF you plan to eat anywhere in Siena after the Palio you MUST make reservations the day before or early morning at the latest. You couldn't even get into the pizza by slice places.
It was a GLORIOUS experience and we plan to do it again!!!
