We are hoping to do 3 weeks in Sicily but really want to take the kids to Pompeii. Any recommendations for doing the trip as a short-ish detour from Palermo or other area in Siciliy?

You have several great side trip options that are not far from Palermo.
1) Segesta
2) Selinunte
3) Agrigento
4) Cefalu’
5) Monreale (easiest and possibly already part of your plans)
6) Erice
7) Mondello (beach)
There are many others. Sure, these are not Pompeii, but 1-3 are beautiful Greek ruins and don’t have a massive detour. I tried to offer some of my favorites. When do you go?

Before or after visiting Sicily, fly into Naples and visit Pompeii. Sicily has so many antiquities too.

The shortest route is to fly Easyjet Flights are about an hour and very inexpensive.
