Palermo to Naples/Sorrento

Any thoughts on the best way to get from Palermo to the Naples/Sorrento area? Train, plane, ferry... Cost, time, convenience and fun are all considerations. Thanks for your suggestions.

Volotea, a budget airline, shows 54 destinations for as low as 19.99Euro. They do show one flight a day from Palermo to Naples International. Typically for the budget airlines, the earlier you book, the lower the fare. Alitalia has the same direct flight for as low as 137Euro. Once at the Naples airport, you can take a bus to Sorrento. I believe that the bus departs several times a day from just outside the front of the airport. You can pay the driver.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check out the budget airlines. The ferry and train both take about 10 hours, which would eat into our precious travel time. We've used the bus system in that part of Italy, and were well pleased. Thanks again.

We took the overnight ferry from Palermo to Naples, then walked to the Fast Ferry dock and took that to Sorrento.

Since we were traveling at night, the ferry cost was our hotel, and we didn't really lose any time sightseeing.
We left at 6 or 7PM and arrived at 6AM. Got a good nights sleep, the ferry from Naples to Sorrento was very enjoyable, and docked just below the town...we took a taxi to expedite finding the hotel, but then walked everywhere, and back to the marina to take a ferry to Amalfi and back.

We enjoyed the ferry trip....fun to watch then load the cars and trucks, then the people. 2-3 places to eat on board and pretty quiet..no security lines to deal with like at the airport.

Just yesterday I booked a 1-hour, mid-afternoon Palermo-Naples flight in May on Volotea for 55.99 Euros. Given their very tight requirements for carry-on baggage, I paid 15 euros for one checked bag, and chose a right side window seat for 6 euros, hoping for a coastal view all the way north. If you are able to plan your travel around one of their bargain flight offers the price begins at just 19.99 Euros, as mentioned by the other Larry. The Volotea web site shows you all the schedules and prices on a 1-month calendar, very easy to see the options. I should have the entire morning and lunch in Palermo before heading for the airport, then have the whole evening and dinner in Naples. Not too shabby.

Thanks, everyone. I just bought tickets on Volotea. A warning to anyone else: when I first checked the price, it was about 19 euros. I waited a few days to reserve (waiting for a reply to an email I had sent them), and the price jumped to 35 euros! But still a bargain.

We have used the ferry system in Italy on a previous trip, and always had good experiences.
