We are traveling in Sicily in November. We would like to stay around Alcamo, to use as a base to see that section of the island. Would it be better to stay in a hotel in Palermo when we arrive, then get a car for the rest of the trip? I know it isn't advised to drive in Palermo. Or are there buses between Alcamo and Palermo? Thanks in advance.
Upon arrival I would stay for 3 nights in Palermo, without a car, to visit Palermo and Monreale. If you plan to visit Cefalù on a day trip by train, add one night. At the end of your Palermo stay, rent a car, and move out of the city. I’d prefer the smaller and quainter village of Scopello to Alcamo, but that is your choice.
There is lots to see in Palermo. I'd definitely want to be staying in the city while sightseeing there.
Robert, you recommend staying in Scopello. Is it a good base to see that area of Sicily? Any recommendations of places to stay? Thank you,
I stay here, right downtown Scopello (Population 25). Can’t beat their prices.

There is also another B&B next door but don’t recall the name. I’m sure there are many others now, in and around the village. Excellent base for western Sicily (if you have a car).
I love Scopello

I loved Scopello. We stayed in a vacation rental house a mile or two outside town. A car was an absolute necessity but it was beautiful. Great base to see Trapani, Erice,Segesta and that whole area. There are also good beaches nearby and we liked walking in the Zingaro nature reserve.
We too loved Scopello. We stayed last April at B&B Talia right in the town, in a huge room with a balcony & fabulous view & made-to-order breakfasts. We loved eating at Bar Nettuno. It’s a tiny town, a great place to relax.
