We will be flying into Palermo, Sicily in mid august on a wednesday and planning to leave sunday. We will have 3 full days and not quite sure how to fill our time. We were planning on going to Mondello Beach for one day, but not quite sure what else there is to do? We are cheap college students so renting a car isn't really an option. Any ideas on places to see or other beaches would be great, Thanks!
Not a beach but you can take the train or bus to Segesta, the site of an ancient Greek settlement and an amazing Doric temple in a mountain setting. You can hike or take a bus from the temple to the theatre.
It might be a long daytrip but you can get to Cefalu, beautiful town and cathedral (mosaics) with several nice beaches. An overnight there would be best, there are rooms to rent across the street from the beach. There's also a big rock you can hike behind the cathedral with some ruins at the top.
Also not a beach town, Erice is not far from Palermo. If you are interested in mosaics, Monreale is an hour outside of Palermo.
Look at Lonely Planet guide for ideas.
check out this site...... I used it extensively for my travels in Sicily.
Tons of info and links to everything.
Go to the Catacombs! You can take a taxi but I like walking so I walked instead - it's not that far. Explore the markets.
