I am doing a RS Sicily tour in May, staying at the tour hotel, the Ambasciatori for four nights beforehand. Apart from the hotel itself, does anyone have recommendations for other good local restaurants nearby?
Bissot Bistro is within walking distance. It comes highly recommended. We plan to go there when we’re in Palermo next week.
Thanks - I have tagged this on my map.
Two restaurants enjoyed by the tour members and me last November were Buatta Cucina and Le Delizie Di Cagliastro, both a short walk on Via Vittorio Emanuele. There’s also a convenient bank ATM machine on Via Vittorio.
Great - I am sure most of the restaurants are OK, but personal recommendations are just so much better. Thank you - I am so looking forward to it all!
We’re in Palermo right now. A fun lively place for lunch is Ma Keda. You can see what they have at to counters by the entrance, but they have tables and waitresses that serve what you want. We had 2 fun meals there. They also have great espresso drinks and bakery options.
Brilliant - thanks! I am building my own little foodie tour of Palermo before the official RS tour!
We were on the RS Sicily tour in April 2016, and also stayed at the Ambasciatori before the start of the tour, and enjoyed eating at Ferro di Cavallo - Via Venezia 20.
They seated us at a table with a couple from northern Italy who were on vacation. Our Italian skills matched their English, but we still had a good time. We ran into the same couple a few days later at Monreale.
Have fun on the tour - it was fabulous.
I really enjoyed Il Maestro del Brodo, which is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel. They're open for lunch Tuesday thru Sunday, but only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday. The food was excellent and prices were reasonable. I was fortunate to get a table for dinner by being there when they opened at 7:30, but in hindsight I would reserve no later than lunchtime for dinner.
I will have to do a lot of walking to burn off all the calories that these recommendations foreshadow! Thank you 😊.
Josephine,
This is not a restaurant but if you want to try some street food...
You may be interested in trying the arancini at, 'Ke Palle', (Via Maqueda, 270) recommended by my friend, Zoe.
Here is Zoe's trip report on Palermo.
Have a wonderful trip!
Certainly! Street food has to be part of my foodie tour!
If you want a very local Sicilian experience (maybe on your third day) try Trattoria da Pino. We went for lunch yesterday and had a great time. They have no printed menus, but one of the employees came over and explained what they were serving. We had camponata, pasta with sardines and fresh fish. Also an excellent dolce cake. Our quarter liter wine was only 1€. If you do decide to go, I recommend around 2 or 2:30. The place gets extremely busy with locals before then. Also, we went to Bisso Bistro a few nights ago. It was fine, but kind of a “hippy” menu. No reservations. Also extremely popular. We went around 7, but by the time we left, there were about 30 people waiting for seats.
Street food at the Vucciria Market, just up Via Roma from the hotel. (It's off to the right, down a flight of steps. Ask at the hotel. Or you can enter from Piazza San Domenico, head back toward the hotel.)
L'Cova dei Sapori at #101 Bara All'Olivella. Good, fresh seafood; entertaining host.
There's a tiny trattoria La Provenda just south of the hotel on Via Roma, tucked back from the road a bit. I had excellent (and cheap) fettucini con funghi there. Very simple, wonderful.
Thanks for the mix of restaurants, cafes and street food - just what I wanted. I have four days of sightseeing planned out before the tour, including a day trip to Cefalu, so I am so glad I have allowed this extra time to get acclimatised to Sicily. A mix of Lonely Planet reading and Googling has given me a full itinerary of Palermo’s churches, palaces and markets, and wandering walking tours. I will now be well fuelled for all this walking!
