Palermo

Hello,

We will be in Palermo for 2.5 days what is the must see? We are thinking of renting a car before we get to Palermo. This way if we have time we can visit other towns close by. Then after Palermo we will be renting a car to travel on to Agrigento & Cantina.
Auy suggestions would be great.

Thank you,
Sam

Palermo- Monreale is one of the wotld's most magnificent churches, up the hill from downtown.
Any guidebook will have all the sites included.

While visiting Palermo you won't need a car, actually Palermo has the 6th worst traffic congestion in the world, according to TomTom statistics. You will need 2 days to visit Palermo and Monreale. You can add a relaxing afternoon at the beach in Mondello, if you have extra time. You can do all of the above using city transit.

A car is useful after you leave Palermo and you base yourself in a smaller town. I like Scopello for western Sicily. From there you can visit several locations by car, like Erice, Segesta, Selinunte, etc.

My favorite sight within Palermo was the Palazzo dei Normanni, but be sure to plan your visit for when the Cappella Palatina is open. Walking through the markets was also fun. Near Palermo, the cathedral at Monreale is a must-see. You can get there by bus from Palermo, or you could stop as you head out by car to Agrigento.

I was in Sicily in July, it was a great visit. We spent a few days in Palermo and especially enjoyed the Royal Palace. A great visit with vg expresso in the cafe there. We also enjoyed a tour of the opera house and Monreale cathedral.
