I am staying in the town of Cinisi by the airport. What transport is available other than taxi. If I take a taxi, are they safe and how much would it be to go 10 kg. The train seems to take 1.5 hrs because stops and you need to transfer. Also, I can't find any books by Rick Steves on Sicily. Did I miss it?
We are breathlessly awaiting publication of the first Rick Steves' Sicily book, with anticipated publication of April 2019 (at least that's the date they told me when I messaged their office a couple of months ago). In the meantime, they recommend the Lonely Planet Sicily book (which, I believe, is what is sent to the Steves' Sicily tour groups). However, I'm finding Rough Guides Sicily most helpful in planning my upcoming trip there.
rome2rio.com shows taxi cost at 15-20 euro.-- https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Cinisi/Palermo-Airport-PMO
Ask your lodging host about transport options?
People heading into Palermo from the airport take the reliable shuttle bus but that doesn't stop in Cinisi. Taxi is probably the right answer.
Pam,
I hope you're not going to travel 10 kg?
Taxi is likely the best option. Are you staying in a B&B, hotel or ? You could ask the staff there which transportation option they'd recommend.
Rick Steves doesn't yet publish a guidebook for Sicily, although that's been promised for a few years and always seems Imminent. However I've yet to see one. This is probably your best option - https://store.ricksteves.com/shop/p/sicily-lonely-planet .
Laura Palermo airport train has been running again for a couple of weeks, now. Depending on budget and final destination, it can be a better option than buses.
Pam Use official sites to check the train schedules. The train journey from Punta Raisi to Cinisi-Terrasini is 42 or 52 minutes long, depending on the departure time.
There are no runs taking 1 hour and half.
Unfortunately you have to change in Piraineto and there are only 3 trains each day from Piraineto to Cinisi-Terrasini. Trenitalia lists 3 departures from Punta Raisi to Cinisi at 10:42, 16:42 and 18:42 (4.7 € pp, one way).
The double name makes me also think that the station is halfway between 2 villages, Cinisi and Terrasini, but you'd better ask the hotel's staff about it.
Dario - Thanks. It seems like a timely topic.
Pam - You can see the Cinisi-Terrasini station on Google Maps to judge how close or far it is to your hotel.
For such a short distance I think a taxi is a better option. The Cinisi station is halfway between Cinisi and Terrasini, so you probably need a taxi from the station to the hotel regardless.
