Will the train from the airport to downtown train station run by mid October 2017? My arrival is the 16th and my first hotel is right by the downtown station.
From AirportsinEurope.com: "Be aware, due to upgrading works on the rail infrastructure it is not possible to travel by train between the airport and the city till late 2017."
I would not count on it, but the airport bus will let you off in front of Palermo Centrale.
In February I took the bus from the airport to the central train station and walked to my nearby hotel on Via Roma. It was an easy and inexpensive trip. The bus driver put luggage for those going all the way to the train station in a separate section under the bus, while luggage for those getting off at interim stops went into the other section.
The Bus is probably your best option - http://www.palermo-airport.com/transportation.html . As I recall, the bus stop is to the right when you exit baggage claim.
The bus worked great for me. The train, when running, was much slower, anyway. My colleague regaled me with a tale of it just last week.
I thought the train would be simpler when I visited several years ago. I remember waiting a long time for the train, then a long slow ride, the whole time wishing I'd taken the bus.
