Palazzo Vecchio

I have been in love with the Palazzo Vecchio and Florence ever since i saw the movie "Hannibal" where Hannibal Lecter pushes the guy off the balcony and he hangs next to the David. Seems gruesome, but i really enjoyed reading the book, and the movie was great as well. I got to see the Palazzo back in 2004, however i was with a tour group and wasnt able to enter. Is it possible to enter the Palazzo? If so, is it possible to see the room where the balcony is located? We will be in Florence in June, and we are also staying on the right side of the Piazza della Signoria!

Yes, you can tour the Palazzo Vecchio and the self-guided tour includes the grand hall where the window with the balcony is located.

When I was there in '08, there was a security line to enter the Palazzo; it was like an airport screening line where your bags go thru the scanner. After they've decided you have no weapons, etc, you're free to roam.

In 2007 we took a tour of the Palazzo Vecchio that was led by an actor in the character of Giorgio Vasari. It was very entertaining and informative. I think I booked it online through Weekend a Firenze. It took you into rooms you could not otherwise see.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies! we are off to italy in two weeks and i am just figuring out the last things i need to book. Will i need to book a tour or reserve admission to the palazzo vecchio ahead of time, or can we just show up and head inside without monster lines? are there any tours that anyone reccommends? thanks,
Natalie
