I read the description of this tour and want to know if it is worth it, a rip-off or if one can follow it on their own.

In my opinion, it was the most interesting part of the tour through the Doge's palace. And you cannot enter those areas on your own. However, if you going in the heat of the summer, be aware that it will be very hot in some of the areas where you're right under the roof. I was there in early October, and it was uncomfortably warm even at that time. The guide mentioned that they do cancel the tours when the heat becomes too bad.
