I have purchased tickets to The Vatican Museum and The Borghese - have people found it necessary to purchase advance tickets for the Palazzo Barberini? We will be in Rome the last week in October.

Not necessary to purchase tickets in advance. I was there in July and had the whole place to myself for the first half hour, only a few people came in after that.
You will have to check everything you bring in at the cloakroom.
