We are going to Bologna, Italy, will be going for dinner with 6 other people whom we don't know in a private home, this is a paid for event, are we expected to take a gift.

Probably not. I would be very surprised if it was expected. These people are running a business. If you feel awkward not taking something you could take a very small gift from home otherwise don't worry about it.
