We are planning on staying Sorrento for 5 days this summer. Then going to Paestum for a day trip. Would it be better to stay in Paestum for a night or will a day trip meet our needs to see the ruins at sunset?

The drive from Paestum back to Sorrento was one of the longest we've made in Italy. We drive all over the country so are good at it. But finding the turn off the autostrada in the mess of Angry/Castle del Mare/etc was impossible. We ended up near Pompeii, got turned around and found the exit on the way back. That put us in the mess right at rush hour and it took almost THREE hours to get back to Sorrento!!! Next time we will come back via the Amalfi Coast road and up over the mountain to the north side... So, if you are intent on seeing the sunset - plan a long trip back - or hire a car and driver so you can relax!

Neil - according to Rick's Italy guidebook, Paestum site closes one hour before sunset.

We stayed at Sorrento and made a day trip to Paestum. But I have to tell you, the sunset view from our hotel (IL NIDO) at the hill top of Sorrento with view of Napoli Bay and Mt. Mt. Vesuvius is worth a trip alone.

Take the very easy Golden Tour from Sorrento to Paestum. It also includes Salerno. They begin to offer this tour in May. http://www.goldentours.it/
