this coming july i want to take the train from paestum to pisa without going to naples. has anyone done this?
do i have to make a train reservation/buy a ticket ahead of time?
You must make your way from Paestum back to Naples Centrale then take the train to the termini in Rome and then change again for the train to Pisa Centrale. There is no other route unless you can find a bus. From Naples centrale to Pisa Centrale is about 4.5 hours.

i am trying desparately to avoid going to naples. i thought i had seen a route from paestum, to salerno to rome to pisa.
can you suggest an alternate way to get to pisa?
thanks
We did just that in 2001. We stayed at a lovely agriturismo near Paestum named Seliano Estate. One of the sons drove us to the train station in Capaccio (sp?); we took a train to Salerno, then on to Rome. Not sure if those trains are still running but it's worth checking out.
You can catch a train from Salerno to Pisa. It still stops at the termini in Rome where you change trains to Pisa Centrale. The trip takes almost 6.5 hours.

thank you! that's what i thought i had seen a while back. now i just have to figure out the timing.
Just go to the Trenitalia site, plug in your start and end point and the approximate times you're looking at and it will tell you all the timing
