We are traveling with our son (age 15) for 4 wks in Italy. Travel between major city stays will be by train, with about 10 days in a car to enjoy hill towns and countryside. My plan is to start our car rental in Sorrento and drive to Paestum (NOT by the coast road). 1 night at Il Granaio dei Casabella, then north to Orvieto. Stopping on the way to see Monte Cassino and Tivoli. I would like advice on which might be a better overnight spot. Suggestions of places of interest along this route are appreciated.
Either is fine, the town is Cassino for Monte Cassino. You might have a look at Castel Gandolfo, Bolsena or Frascati as well. Bolsena has a lake, a castle, and the best gelato in the world at an artigianale shop on via Santa Cristina.
Thanks Zoe, especially for the gelato advisory. We have a reservation in Orvieto, but I'm thinking Paestum to Orvieto, with stops for interest may be too big a bite for one day. Google maps says its a little over 4 hours direct. BTW does anyone know how the tolls are on the A1?
If you plot your travel on ViaMichelin.com it will tell you exactly what your tolls are.
