Paestum museum closure?

I'm planning to spend four nights in Salerno this fall, in large part to visit Paestum, but I was just told by someone who should know that the museum, with the exception of the Tomb of the Diver items, is closed, and it sounded like it would remain closed for a while. I've been trying to bring up the museum's official website but can't get it to load.

Has anyone been there recently who could confirm it? If so, do you think the rest of the site without the museum is still worth the visit? I could conceivably put Salerno/Paestum off for some future trip.

I don't know about any closure, but it seems odd that the Tomb of the Diver items would be on display since they are housed in the museum. At any rate, in my opinion, the Paestum structures are well worth the visit. Having visited several of the Greek sites in Italy, I thought Paestum was outstanding. Hopefully the museum will be open because it, too, was very interesting.

The site is well worth a visit. Another place near Salerno is The Pontecagnano National Archaeological Museum. Pontecagnano is just outside of the city center (I also happened by during a long run from Salerno so it really is close).

The website (https://museopaestum.cultura.gov.it/orari-e-biglietti/ is up right now. In case that's no longer the case when you next try it, here's the info I copied about opening times; sorry about all the capital letters; that's how it appears on the website:

The Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia is open from 8:30 to 19:30, with the last ticket issued at 18:30.

From 18:00 is issued the ticket "only archaeological areas" which excludes the possibility of visiting the museum of Paestum (last admission to the Museum at 19:00).

OPENING HOURS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF VELIA

FROM 8:30 TO 19:30, ISSUE OF THE LAST TICKET AT 18:30

LAST COMPLETE VISIT AT 18:00

ACROPOLIS CLOSES AT 18:30

FROM 18:30 IT IS POSSIBLE TO VISIT ONLY THE LOWER PART OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA

Thanks to all for the replies! I've decided to go anyway; sounds worthwhile, and I'll visit some secondary sites as well.

Has anyone visited recently? My friend and I were also having trouble getting the site to load. We found a third party site with an audio guide, but when we tried to book that at the last minute it said it was unavailable. I just came across this thread and am wondering if it's closed, and that's why we're having so many issues!
Also, can you still visit the grounds even if the museum is closed? If so, do you still need tickets?

Hi Shop, the museum is a separate entrance from the Paestum Greek ruins. My daughter & I walked through the grounds of the ruins last year and didn't go through the museum. We really enjoyed our time there! It's an easy train ride from Salerno.

I was in Paestum this spring and I can confirm that the museum is closed for remodeling (a big disappointment) and that the Tomb of the Diver items are on display in a temporary building. Access to the park and temples is separate and still available.

Yes, Paestum is worth a visit without the museum. It is a favourite site, I’ve visited it three times over the past 10 years. The three Greek temples are magnificent and the whole site is interesting as it holds the remains of a walled Greek city dating back to 500 BCE that was later Romanized. If you go, do take the chance to see the painted tomb frescos. Also nearby is a Buffalo farm where they make incredible Buffalo milk cheeses. You never saw such contented animals - they have access to automatic massaging machines! We should be so lucky!

Thank you all for the updates! We are keeping Paestum in our itinerary. We had already planned on visiting one of the buffalo farms too, so I'm excited it will all still be happening!

I was there a week ago. The museum at Pasteum is indeed closed except for a small area that includes the diver. There was no explanation so don’t know when it will reopen but IMO the visit to the temples and museum were well worth my time. Enjoy!

The website above seemed to take me to Vivatickets, and then there were no tickets being sold.

Is there another site for buying in advance? I will be there on a Sunday, will it be easy to get tickets there?

(It seems to close early (1:40) on the 3rd Monday, which is why I’m going on Sunday. ) Going to Salerno just for Paestum.

They will definitely be selling tickets on site. Paestum had very few visitors when I was there in early March. I can't imagine you'll run into a delay at the ticket window.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this. I'm going to visit Paestum a week from today and am looking forward to it.
