We plan to stay one night in Paestum on our way south to Sicily. Is there a hotel within walking distance of the train station? I can't figure out where the train stops. Or would it be better to take a bus from Salerno and, if so, where would a bus stop? And any recommendations for a hotel (50-80 Euro range)?
Thanks
I wouldn't worry about being near the train station, when you make your reservation let the hotel know you would like to be picked up and they will do it. I've stayed in Paestum se eral times, and within minutes of arriving there are a dozen cars from the various hotels picking up guests. They will drive you back to the station as well. I think the station is a little less than a kilometer away from the ruins/hotels area. I really like Hotel Poseidonia Mare, which is near the beach and about a kilometer from the ruins (great breakfast and they loan bikes). I've also stayed at Villa Rita, which is a little closer to the ruins. You can check booking.com to see locations, photos and reviews, and googlemaps to see distances. Paestum has a good museum (closed Mondays) and a combination ticket for the museum and archeological site. There are also numerous buffalo mozzarella
farms in the area, if you have time for a visit (hotel may be able to help with this). Be sure to buy your ticket for your next destination before you get to Paestum - as of last summer, the train station at Paestum was unstaffed and did not have a ticket kiosk. Or you can book your next destination online at trenitalia.com and choose the e-ticket option (you can ask the hotel to print out your email with ticket info if you want a backup copy). Have a great time in Paestum!
