The one that is the main trenitalia station is about a mile or so from the main entrance? If that is too far, you can always take a taxi...

Just to clarify what Katherine is saying, Paestum is served by Trenitalia.

To get to the Circumvesuviana, you'd go all the way Naples (or maybe transfer to Amalfi Coast bus to Sorrento) then onto the local line to Pompeii.

Is the one mile walk to the ruins through an OK part of town. Is there anything to see or do along the way. Is there a small hotel or B/B that would be convenient.

As I recall, the street between the Pompei train station and the Pompeii scavi Porta Marina entrance is mostly lined with commercial establishments. The walk, which took about 25 minutes, wasn’t all that interesting and the area never felt unsafe. There’s a hotel on the piazza near the tourist group entrance to Pompeii (just a few minutes walk from Porta Marina entrance), but I have no experience with it that I can pass along. Depending on your next destination after Pompeii, you might also consider checking your bags at the free baggage check at the Porta Marina entrance and then continuing by Circumvesuviana train to either Sorrento or Naples for the night.
