We are considering staying in Padova and using the commuter train to Venice each day if we can find a nicer hotel and Padova at a better rate
(have stayed in Venice twice before) Has anyone done this? Is there a multi day ticket or pass...as it seems it's a 2 euro each way. Advantages? We are a party of 4
It's 3.55 euro each way. Don't know about commuter tickets. You usually need some kind of residence card for that. Considering its half the price of a vaporetto ticket, seems like its already a pretty good deal. If you get on the Regionale Veloce in Padova at the same time I board the No 1 boat in San Marco, you'll get to Santa Lucia 13 minutes before I do.
I've stayed in Padova, it's a great destination itself, and very close to Venice. Try to stay in Venice for some late evenings if you can, it's very different once the cruisers and trippers are gone by late afternoon.
If you hadn't said you'd stayed in Venice twice already, I'd be twisting your arm to get you NOT to stay in Padova. That said, Padova is very charming and worth staying in. Just remember that when you go to Venice, you'll be surfing in on one of the waves of tourists AND you won't be able to go back to your room for a mid-day break.
My husband and I did this very thing in December. It was wonderful! We stayed at the Grand Italia Hotel which is mere steps from the train station in Padova. Train tickets are cheap. Just make sure to double check that you aren't buying the expensive ones on the express train. The hotel was comfortable, clean and the breakfast was nice. The trains run late so we enjoyed some late evenings in Venice before coming back to our home base. The location allowed some excursions into other places in the Veneto as well. And Padova is fantastic.
Thanks. Appreciate everyone's thoughts.
