Padua or Venice for 5 nights

we would probably do a day trip to Verona and day trip to Venice ( have been before and loved) will one or 2 day trips to Venice satisfy the beautiful city.

  1. Cafes and piazzas draw me to Padua

  2. Venice has the feel and look nothing like it! but is there a tourist prices and diminished quality to staying on island

Any thoughts
Thanks

If it has to be five nights in one place, I'd choose Venice for sure, because as you might recall it's much quieter and more pleasant in the morning and at night, when many of the tourists are gone. The day time is the perfect time to day trip out to Padua and/or Verona from Venice.

If you stay in Padua, you do the opposite: visit Venice during the day, when all the other tourists are there.

Yes, it's likely going to cost more to stay on Venice than in Padua. Not sure what you mean about "diminished quality" of staying in Venice however.

I mean diminished choice of reasonable family Restaurants and selection of places to eat

Good point on timing of tourists though

I have been to both, but always have stayed in Padova. Another fantastic but underrated italian city.
We cannot compare the cities. If budget is not a problem, and you like the glamour and endless romantic vibe of Venice, stay in Venice.
I got a local ‘family' in Padova so my choice is personal.
You will have a great time regardless.

The rooms and meals in the Dorsuduro and Cannareggio areas are less expensive. I really liked staying in the historic center of Verona but I didn't find Padua particularly attractive. It might depend on the time of year. Verona during opera season is very crowded, I'm told.

Are you opposed to splitting those nights up? I enjoyed Padua, but five nights seems like a lot. And if you do still want to experience some of Venice then it seems like staying there a couple nights works best.

Also, taking the bus from Padua to Marco Polo airport was super easy! It took an hour, which is almost as long as it takes to get there from Venice itself.

Thats not a bad Idea. I may just rent one night to enjoy Venice by night
but I just feel Venice is going to be a madhouse during the day. Glad I saw it when things were normal amount of tourism.

Venice is only a madhouse during the day if you go where the tourist crowds go.

90 to 95 percent of Venice is where the tourist crowds don't go.

I return time after time to Venice and except when playing "sardines" getting on a vaporetto at rush hour rarely find a tourist mob. But most of the time I don't go where they go.
