What is best method of travel between Padua or Trieste) and Ljubljana in late February? It looks like train routing is very indirect (7 hours), bus service often sketchy. Have seen one site (GoOpti) that offers shared ride via mini-bus. Anyone know its reliability?
It looks like you can do Padua to Ljubljana in 6:06 with 2 train changes. One of those changes is in Trieste. Would be much faster to stay in Trieste. Looks like quickest route is 3:33 and it's direct with no train change. Just picked a date in February at random.
Hmm. That 3:33 "no change" itinerary starts with a 90 minute transfer by taxi or bus from Trieste Central to Villa Opcina, then a 2 hour 3 minute train to Ljubljana.
If you can get an early train from Padua to Venice it looks like you can connect by train or bus from their to Ljubljana, but the bus (www.drd.si) looks like the easiest option to me.
Check out these detail on how to do it by train: http://www.seat61.com/venice-to-ljubljana-and-zagreb-by-train.htm#.VotljTZlm3U
Besides the bus on drd.si, the GoOpti service is another option suggested in Rick's book.
Trieste seems easier than Padua as a departure point. There's a nonstop bus that takes 1 hour 40 minutes. Here's a link to the company: https://www.flixbus.com. Fare is under $20. I've never taken this bus but maybe someone else on the forum can weigh in. I looked around Fodor's forum a bit and reviews seem ok. It's a pretty short bus ride.
