Packing to carry back purchases

For our trip to Italy I had planned on carrying an unpacked duffle bag to fill with our purchases and check as baggage on the return trip. Now I see that Delta is only allowing one checked bag and is charging for a second bag. Any suggestions on the best way to carry back purchased items ? I was considering carrying a larger suitcase or a carrying on a backpack so I can put clothes in it and fill the suitcase with wine, etc We are renting a car in Italy for traveling.

From the Delta website:

"Currently, you can check two bags per passenger free of charge. Starting May 5, 2008 this will be reduced to one free bag per passenger traveling in the U. S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico."

It says nothing about Europe. So, I would recommend asking Delta about it and see what they say. Your original plan might still work.

Failing that, a suitcase that has some expansion capability might work, but remember the weight limit is 50 pounds. It really doesn't take much to reach it.

On our recent trip to Italy, we used RS rollaboards, but expanded them and checked them. The wine was comfortably ensconced among dirty clothes. Our return required a connection in Chicago, so we could not carry on the wine.

Jim, I checked with Delta and the rule of one bag does not apply to international flights - 2 bags are allowed. Thank you for the tip!
