what is considered the range of the weight of a conversion pack, RS style purchased, when we get everything in it.. ? my wife and I have really studied and tried to get our's as light as we can and we are in the 20-23 lb range. I have the heavier with the guide book and camara, elec adapters and all the extra little things.. thanks , george
Do you mean the limit in order to take it as a carry on? This would be 10 kilos or about 22 lbs...
It depends on what you mean by range of weight.
If you mean allowances on airlines, well, it depends on the airline...anywhere from 11 pounds to no limit.
As far as comfort goes, after 20 pounds, the average person will start to feel it when carrying it around. RS suggests no more than 20 lbs.
Time to start going through your bag and finding ways to cut a few pounds.
It depends on how much you can handle, lifting your bag overhead on planes and trains. I'm female and find that 18# is my limit. Sometimes people help me with the lifting, but I don't count on it.
thanks for the info..
I was talking more on what is the weight an average person might shoot for that they can comfortably handle. the RS recommended weight for an average person. I had it down to 16 lbs on a recent trip but that did not include the camara, book and a few other misc things that would go normally in my day bag while walking around.. I have put it on my back and it feels fine with everything in it..
I have done some serious backpacking when younger and took over 50 into the Grand Canyon and other places so this feels pretty nice..I think I will look at how I can cut it down though.. Airlines require 22lbs ? that is good to know..my day bag is small Civita and is 6-7 lbs of the total so I may just keep it in one hand..thanks for all the feedback.. geo
George...do not go by that 22 lbs for carry-on. Many European airlines are much stricter than that, and many American airlines go up to 40 lbs.
Since you are writing this in the "To The Boot" section, most Italian airlines are anywhere from 12-17 lbs limit for carry-on.
The real test is to pack your bag just as you would for your trip, and take a walk near your home. If you can handle it for about 30 minutes, you should be fine. If not, time to take stuff out.
But check with YOUR airline to see their carry-on limits.
And check to see if your airline allows a carry-on AND a personal item like a camera bag or purse.
