Packing in suitcase

Hi- This is my first time traveling out if the US. I know this is an odd question given we're headed to Italy- But my husband insists on packing some of his own coffee to take just in case- are we allowed to bring coffee from the US into Italy through customs? I am having trouble finding a straight answer on any websites and I am not sure where else to look of if there is somewhere I can call- probably because Who in their right mind wants to bring crappy US coffee into Italy, but... He won't relent. Thanks for any help.

From the TSA website:

Coffee (Beans or Ground)
Carry On Bags: Yes
Checked Bags: Yes
TSA officers may instruct travelers to separate items from carry-on bags such as foods, powders, and any materials that can clutter bags and obstruct clear images on the X-ray machine. Travelers are encouraged to organize their carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to ease the screening process and keep the lines moving.

I'll add that IF you are packing it in carry on, have it toward the top/zipper edge or carry it thru security in an easy to reach personal item. Sometimes they want to see food items, sometimes not.

I'll add that I always take Starbucks Via instant packets. I want coffee early in the AM and many times a room will have an electric kettle so I can have coffee before the breakfast rooms open. I've never had trouble with them but I pack them all together and easily accessible.

Last summer, coming home from Shetland, I had a bag of Scottish oatmeal (insert eyeroll here!!) and every security person wanted to look at that closer.

I am just curious as to what he intends to do with it there. Is he assuming there will be US-style coffee makers in hotel rooms? Or is it just instant?

Travel tea kettle but all hotels we have booked have personal coffee/tea makers in room.

Note that it might be Nespresso or another coffee pod system, so the portable kettle might be needed.

We had to master the Moka pot when we were there - I wasn't tempted to bring one back home. It made it easy to justify going out for a morning cappuccino. But we found a large selection of ground coffee available at the supermarket.

If your husband's coffee comes in a pouch and not a can it could be decent. But this is on the order of bringing your own whiskey to Scotland.

Brilliant idea. We always travel with coffee and a press - which has just broken after about 20years of travel, made it to our last day in Spain. It is great to be able to have coffee in the morning without having to be up and dressed. We bought a camping style french press which is some type of hard plastic that doesn't break. It was expensive but worth it and it is the plunger bit which has just broken.
We have taken coffee and press all around the world and never had any problems.

Pam, me, too! Although usually I wind up not using mine, and instead collect the ones the hotel leaves in the room if I don't use them. I now have an assortment of Starbucks and Nescafe instant packets in my collection, lol! They do come in handy at home.

American coffee culture has, in some ways, surpassed its Italian roots. For example, there are way more craft roasters everywhere in America. Finding good coffee for drip or aeropress isn’t easy in Italy. Their coffee culture is very focused on doing coffee the one “correct” way (espresso) and doing it very well.

What type of equipment and coffee is he bringing with?

Edit: There was a time when coffee was a bit of a red flag for TSA/customs since it was used to cover up the smell of less legal substances for K-9s. I'm not sure if the Italians will think it's suspicious to bring coffee into Italy, but I'd be curious to hear if your husband's bag gets opened.

I’m not a coffee drinker, but hubby is and he always takes Starbucks Via’s for the same reason Pam and Mardee do. Our last few trips have been lengthy and he has had to replenish during our travels. He always finds something similar at a grocery store.

I’m another person who brings the little instant coffee sticks. I like Starbucks’s Verona coffee, but I prefer the Nescafe instant coffee sticks. I love the Italian espresso & morning cappuccinos, but for the first few days, I need to have coffee at odd hours to avoid a migraine.

My husband is a regular strong black coffee at home, but he had a cappuccino one time in Italy and always orders that just when we’re in Italy or France. So, have him try an espresso or cappuccino once while he’s in Italy - just for the fun of it, as long as it’s not coming from a push-button machine.

Hint: if you order a latte, you will just receive milk, no coffee. A caffe is going to be an espresso. Here’s some help. And the coffee cup will be smaller than a US cup.
