Overwhelmed: Follow Up!

Two adults a toddler and a baby will be in Italy for 10 days. We train into Milan and fly out of Milan. We will have a car (yes, we understand the risks, rules and possible pitfalls).

  1. Is Isle of Elba worth seeing in May?
  2. If we were to do Isle of Elba for a few days, where would be a scenic country area in Tuscany that we could base in for 4 or so days after that would be a good midway point for our journey back up to Milan? Hubby wanted Val d’Orcia in Tuscany, but I think it’s a bit too far south logistically...
  3. Is this a silly plan in general?

Are you planning on any time in Milan? Where are you flying from?
It is a four hour drive from Milan to Piombino, where ferries depart, so I would not recommend doing that upon arrival. Plug some options into Google maps that correlate with the drive times you are comfortable with. Places in northern Tuscany might include Lucca, Pistoia, Barga, but you should look in Liguria too.
I think Elba would be lovely in May, especially late May, but we need more details on timing, logistics.

We arrive at 6pm from Paris, so I’m thinking we spend a day or two in Milan before we set out on our journey down south!

Need basic info. Been to Italy before? When are you going? is this part of a larger trip to Europe? If so, give some details. Have you traveled in Europe before?

Frankly, without context, Elba seems like a pretty bizarre choice...

Look at the post by TJ on Montepulciano currently active. Save Elba for your 3rd or 4th trip to Italy.

We will be in France for a week beforehand for a family event. It will be mid-May. We are flying to the Netherlands after for a few days. I have been to Europe several times (though not Italy) and hubby has never been.

Elba, good question. We usually opt for beach vacations. We will be spending the better part of 3 weeks visiting beautiful “typical” European scenery, so this seemed like a nice way to get our beach fix amidst it all. Might not be the best plan, but figured it was worth exploring as a serious option.
