Overnite trip from Rome

We are going to be in Rome for 8 days in Feburary and would like to take an overnite trip to either Florence or Sorrento. Which would be the better trip?

I love Sorrento it is beautiful but you would definitely be seeing it off season. If you've never been to Florence it really is magnificent with so much history and art. If the weather is rainy or cold it would definitely be more enjoyable than Sorrento. Orvieto is another option and its much closer to Rome with very reasonably priced hotels and a nice place to experience Umbria and the countryside and get a break from Rome.

For an overnight (1 night) trip, I would pick Florence. Travel time is only 1.5 hours, whereas Sorrento would be a little over 3 hours under the best-case scenario and could easily be 4 hours or more. I think the better option is the one allowing you the most time to enjoy and explore your destination, but Sorrento is doable if either it or one of the nearby sights (Capri, Pompeii, etc) is on your "must see or will regret it" list. If you do decide on Florence and want to visit the Uffizi and/or Academia museums, ask your hotel to reserve entry times. Some may say reservations aren't needed in February, but better to be safe than to miss out on them.

Thanks for the suggestions. Right now I am leaning toward a trip to Florence. Would it be better to go to Florence on Saturday or Monday?

Saturday. As I recall, most/all of the museums are closed on Mondays.

Visiting Florence is like wandering through the actualy Renaissance, live and in person. The art and beauty are overflowing from every doorway and piazza. You'll never forget it or regret the time there.

Remember to pre-book tickets to see the David, although you can see a lot more Michelangelo sculpture at the Bargello Museum for less $. We had good luck getting same day tickets for the Ufizzi since we were willing to go at the end of the day. They have timed entry for the Ufizzi and the David. The Bargello just lets you pay & walk in and is much cheaper.

Whatever you choose, its all beautiful. There are so many outdoor fountains and sculputures--and those are free!
