On the way to S.Italy we will be arriving at LdV a/p on 11/1 & leaving from there the next a.m. for Reggio. It has been suggested we stay in Ostia rather than next to the a/p or in Rome. what are your views? We have contacted one hotel in Ostia - Hotel Ping Pong, & my husband has also 'looked' at Hotel La Villeta. Has anyone used these hotels? what were they like? any other suggestions? This helpline is terrific . We have learned a lot from the Q&A. Thanks, in anticipation.
I would spend the night in central Rome, unless you're planning on flying early next morning from FCO to Reggio Calabria, in which case it makes sense to stay in Ostia or in Fiumicino. Are you taking the train the next morning or flying?
According to Google Maps, Bivongi (near Stilo) is 94 kilometers and under two hours by car from the Lamezia Airport. I'd rent a car at the airport. The "regionale" trains from Lamezia Terme are frequent to Monasterace-Stilo station along the Calabrian Ionian Coast (5 Euros). The remaining 15 kilometers to Bivongi are covered by Autolinee Federico. You can also get to Reggio Calabria from Bivongi by Autolinee Federico. See schedules at: www.autolineefederico.it
Do you have any desire to see any of Rome or will be you be spending time there later or have you spent time there in the past? How are you traveling to Reggio, train or plane? If you will be spending time in Rome later or have been there before, then staying in Ostia and seeing the Ostia Antica site or just having a relaxing day to recover from jet lag might be a worthwhile alternative to going into Rome for the night, especially if you fly out again the next morning. If you are going to Reggio by train, going in to Rome might make more sense if you leave from Roma Termini.
Thanx to those who have replied to our questions. To make things a lttle clearer here is our itinerary such as it is. We look forward to your feedback. 10/31 we fly from Lisbon to FCO & stay overnite in Ostia, probably @ Hotel Ping Pong. 11/1 fly from FCo @ 9:30am to Lamezia Terme. We have decided to stay somewhere there overnite to gather info on best way to get to Bivongi from there -car rental, bus, train. We hope to stay in or near Bivongi 'til Friday 11/5, hpoing to find a B&B or hotel, preferably local; suggestions welcome. Do we need a car to get around this rural area or are there buses/trains that run @ regular intervals daily? After Bivongi we will be spending time in S.Italy prabably Sicily until we meet with family in Naples/Sorrento. Will be there 3 days & include a trip to Pompeii, & then return to Rome for 3 days flying back to Lisbon on 11/18. Can we fit in a day trip to Florence? Thanks again for all your help, suggestions
Hi Brenda - For many years I have suggested to others and stayed there myself - http://www.hotelforte.com/ Located directly at The Spanish Steps and easy walking to The Via Veneto, Trevi Fountain, and Roman Forum. Also great Cafes on the side streets by The Steps. My friends Emanuel and Emanuella run the front desk and will take very good care of you! Ciao, Greg
