Overnight trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast

My daughter and I will be travelling to Italy in June, Rome is our base, and will be taking a side trip to the Amalfi Coast. We will travel from Rome to Pompeii, spend the day, then travel to Sorrento for the night. I want to make the most of our next day touring the Amalfi Coast. I would like to travel by bus and take a ferry ride to capture all the excitement and beauty that Rick writes about. So, if I take a ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi, is the bus ride from Amalfi to Salerno just as exciting? We will be travelling back to Rome from Salerno. Any suggestions on planning our day trip is truly appreciated.

They are obviously both beautiful views. Take bus going to Amalfi Coast for best Mt to sea views, ferry returning past villages.

A ferry is just more enjoyable overall. The bus can be packed, especially in summer. Getting the seat you want might not be an option, everyone is pretty much trying to do the same thing you are. If you’re heading to Salerno later in the afternoon you could just be sitting in traffic for a while. The ferry is all fresh air and sunshine.

If you decide to take the bus, going fron Sorrento to Salerno gives you the best views of the ocean since you be on the water side going south.

We all have had our experiences with the trip from Sorrento to Amalfi Town. So my 2 cents are as valuable as anybody's. A few years ago my friends and I took a boat from Sorrento - sorry, no details - but we stopped along Capri and everyone jumped in the water for 30-45 minutes. Amazing! Then we got off in Positano, took the bus to Amalfi and on to Ravello. We decided to take the bus back from Amalfi Town. So easy! We didn't have to fight for good seats. Just sit on the driver's side for the best view. On another trip I took the bus . . . stood all the way and saw nothing but have the bruises to provde that tourists aren't always nice people, at least on a siteseeing bus. I'll continue to take the boat over (even if there's no swimming) and the bus back. Haven't been to Salerno but thanks for reminding me that it's on my short list for this June. :)

The SITA bus line from Sorrento ends in Amalfi. There's another SITA bus line from Amalfi to Salerno. Much of the ride from Sorrento is inland till a few kms before Positano. I'd take the ferry to Amalfi, then the bus to Salerno. I hope you won't have much luggage with you.

I have a question. I'm thinking of doing this same basic itinerary, but wondering about luggage. I know you can store it in Pompeii, but what about when you get to the towns? You have to carry it all with you?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm leaning towards the Ferry to Amalfi then the bus to Salerno. Is it too much to want everything? Thanks again.

Since you're only doing an overnight, leave your luggage at your lodging in Rome. Take only a small overnight bag or backpack.

Ferry Sorrento-Amalfi, and bus Amalfi-Salerno is a great plan.
