Overnight trains from Sicily to Rome

I will be booking a single cabin on an overnight train from Siracusa to Rome. It will be easier for me to just travel from city center to city center direct, rather than fly from Catania to FCO. Plus I do love sleeper trains.

Trenitalia has a train that I'd like to book: the InterCityNotte 1956 - it leaves Siracusa at 7pm and arrives in Rome 12 hours later.

I see two types of single cabins offered: the 'Posto Singolo' (?) and the 'Excelsior Singolo' (single 1st class?). When searching for info that would explain the difference between the two, my usual go-to website has failed me -- Seat61 states: (Excelsior) "these have now disappeared from all domestic Italian routes". As of this year, Trenitalia has re-offered the 'Excelsior' cabins on this route and Seat61 has not yet updated for this.

It looks as if this train links up with the ICN 1954 from Palermo. Trenitalia sells the 'Excelsior" cabin from Siracusa, but another web source places this cabin on the Palermo train, not the Siracusa one. Does this mean that access to the 'Excelsior' cabin is only available onwards from Messina Centrale (10pm), once the Palermo train is hooked up? I really would like a cabin with a private WC, but I'm not sure that having to change seat/cabin later in the evening would be worth it.

I would appreciate some current info that can help me choose which cabin...thank you!

I'm not sure if this helps, but I would trust what the Trenitalia site says since that's the official site of the Italian State Railway.
