overnight train travel in Italy

Hi all. My daughter is traveling from Milan to Calabria. I see there are some overnight trains. Anyone have any experience with this? I wonder what the best way to book. I notice one site charged $180. The trenitalia site was cheaper but not all the details were in english. Thanks.

Charlie,

I just checked the Trenitalia website & you can get a Super Economy (discounted) ticket, from Milano Centrale to Reggio Di Calabria Centrale, for €59.80, when booked 120 days in advance.

I linked the trenitalia website in English, but if you get the one in Italian, you can change it by clicking on the British flag, on the top right.

I've only taken an overnight train once in my life & I don't recommend it. It's hard to get any sleep & one arrives exhausted to one's destination, not worth it, IMO.

If she doesn't want to be in a train for 9-10 hours, perhaps she can break up this long trek by stopping in Rome for at least an overnight stay.

Hope this helps ;-)

Where in Calabria is she going? Regardless, I would strongly recommend looking into a flight. The overnight train will likely be miserable and won't save much money.

She can get a flight much more conveniently, in my opinion. Probably for less money, too.

Charlie,

Check here for flight options from Milan Linate Airport to Reggio Calabria (REG):https://www.skyscanner.com

I don't know when your daughter will be traveling this route, but I just checked skyscanner & AlItalia flies nonstop for $38 pp (I chose December 13)

As far as being in Italian, click on the google translate tab in your browser from the Italian. You'll see:
"Posto Doppio", "uomo", "donna", "intero", (Double sleeping compartment, Men, Women, Entire)
"Posto Singolo" (Single sleeping compartment) expensive
"Cucinetta C4" "promiscua", "donna", "compartment intero" (4 person couchette, mixed, women, entire)
"Compertmento 3 Letti" "uomo" "donna", "intero", (compartment where 6 seats fold out into 3 beds, men, women, entire)

Charlie,

I'm not sure if these warnings are still current, but a few pertinent items from the Government of Canada travel website.....

"Train passengers have been robbed while distracted or sleeping, and there have been reports of thefts on the train connecting Fiumicino airport to central Rome."

"Rail passengers have received drugged food or drink and were then robbed or assaulted while sleeping. Keep your compartment door securely locked."

I checked briefly and travel by train during the day will be about 10 hours, by night train 11-19 hours and a flight about 4 hours. In this case, the flight looks like the best option.
