Will be driving from Castellina in Chianti leaving on a Saturday towards Strasbourg France. Will leave around 8:30 AM and do not need to arrive in Strasbourg until around 4-5 PM. the following day, Sunday. Assume total driving time around 9 hours. Would like any thoughts as to places to stay for Saturday night. Would like to avoid the larger cities such as Milan (been there), but stay in a smaller town/city of interest. Also prefer to do more driving on Sunday because most towns would be closed on Sunday, This would allow us more time on Saturday if we wanted to stop along the way.
Any ideas as to where to stop would be appreciated.
Much depends on which way you go over the Alps. Remember that if you go the shortest way via Switzerland, there's a 40CHF vignette, versus via Austria an 8 Euro vignette plus some tolls. Google says 850km and 8 1/2 hours via Switzerland, 1000 km and 10 hours via Austria. Also remember France has tolls for autos and Germany generally not. Bolzano is a very pleasant small city where German begins to predominate over Italian. There you can see the great Otxi - the ice man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ötzi_the_Iceman. Don't be tempted by Innsbruck, I found it to be charmless.
