My wife and I will transition from Split Croatia to Genoa Italy to catch a cruise in late June. I'm thinking we should spend a night somewhere halfway split up the drive. I've been looking at some of the villages north of Venice but would like some suggestions on which one. Does anyone have a recommendation on "the" place to spend a night there?
I'll be curious to see what people say. We are thinking of visiting Trieste, mainly to visit the Lipica stud farm (Lippizaner horses). Triese has lots of history and looks lovely in the photos.
I am still leaning towards something up in the hills a bit. I'm really looking for feedback on towns to overnight in - Bassano Del Grappa? Asolo? Treviso? Others? From what I've read they are all worth visiting, but I'm trying to figure out which is best to sleep in. I was leaning towards Asolo based on one guidebook I have. I'm hoping someone who as visited this area would have a suggestion.
Asolo !!! We spent a night in Bassano del Grappa, and it was very nice, but but when we drove past Asolo and saw it perched high on the hill, I wished we had stayed there. It is difficult by public transport, but since you will have a car, it will be easy. That would definitely be my choice of the places you mention.
Walking around Treviso for a half day was OK, but I wouldn't make a special trip there. I can't comment on your other choices. I have long been interested in Trieste, and my friend spent a few days in Udine and loved it (I'm not sure if that's convenient for your route or not).
Asolo sounds like the place. Looks like they have a reasonable b&b in town as well. Thanks.
I can tell you what town not to stop in. Udine It's another Roman town, and the city's circular. Tiny cars are everywhere, including on the sidewalks. The Romans never planned their cities for automobiles.
But the real problem was the lack of food. We found plenty of bars and gelatini places, but few restaurants close to our hotel. We finally settled on generic pizza.
