Overnight layover

Hello everyone--we have a long layover (overnight) at LHR on the way to Rome. Has anyone here checked in at any of the hotels nearby to rest? Our flight is set to arrive LHR at 10PM and next flight to FCO is at 7AM the next day.

Just wanted to know your experience (security, customs, etc.). Thanks.

There are lots of hotels surrounding Heathrow. I would pick one based on accessibility from the relevant terminals. You will not see anything except your bed. If you land on time at 10 PM, you will be out through immigration 11:00 to 11:30. Hopefully you are not late landing. For a flight to Rome you need to be checking in 5:30 latest. You will not get much sleep.

Heathrow is for passenger purposes 3 airports, Terminals 1 and 2 are in the middle of the airport, T4 on the south side and T5 on the west. It is not easy to get from one to another.
Which Terminal are you arriving at, which departing from?

Thanks! We weren't planning on doing anything except rest (or at least try to).

I'm pretty sure we're arriving at Terminal 3. Not sure yet about our departure, but from the looks of it...it will be at Terminal 5.
I saw that there is a Premier Inn hotel right outside Terminal 4, so that looks like a good option.

Correction, I meant: Terminals 2 and 3 are in the middle of the airport, T4 on the south side and T5 on the west.
Terminal 1 is closed and being re-built.
Sorry for the typo!

If you are arriving at T3, and leaving at T5, then you still need a train, bus or a taxi to get from T3 to T4, and in the morning from T4 to T5
It is all explained on the Heathrow website here: https://www.heathrow.com/airport-guide/getting-around-heathrow/travel-between-terminals

Terminal 3 to Terminal 4
Free shuttle trains run between Heathrow Central station (Terminals 2 & 3) and Terminal 4, There are four trains an hour. Average journey time: 20 minutes
Terminal 4 to Terminal 5
Take bus number 482 or 490 (destination: Heathrow Terminal 5) from Bus Stop 7 for a free transfer between terminals. Average journey time: 20 minutes

I stayed at the Premier Inn near Terminal 4 last September. It seemed quite new. There wasn't a lot of signage within the airport. I think I ended up following a "Hilton" sign until the PI signs started showing up. I got a fabulous rate (under 50 GBP for a single). The hotel is probably a 10-minute walk from T4, through a sort-of-enclosed walkway (meaning that it isn't totally weather-tight).
