Overnight in Ostia Antica before departure from Italy

We will return to Rome for a couple of days before departing the country on Good Friday from FCO airport. I am thinking of going to Ostia Antica on Thursday and spending that night there, because it is close to the airport and because the Easter-time crowds in Rome may make travelling to FCO that morning such a headache. Is it a hassle to reach the airport from Ostia Antica? Anyone know whether it would be a nice ending to a 2 week trip to Italy?

I would just stay in the city. I don't think the crowds heading to the airport will be any worse than normal. Donna

Are you sure you mean Ostia Antica or Ostia Lido? Either way, it can indeed be hard to get to the airport from there. Your hotel/B&B will be able to tell you if they offer some sort of shuttle or private car service. Supposedly it's hard to get a cab to come out to Ostia since they make their money on getting fares in both directions, and not that many people go from FCO to Ostia. There are buses, but they're a little intimidating to use. Since you're leaving on Good Friday, you'll be going against the tide of incoming visitors, so I think you would do best to stay in Rome.

Not a good idea. There is no hotels around OA - it is just a park. While it looks close to the airport it is not via transportation. You would need to take a taxi. Public transportation is complicated because it is not oriented to getting people to the airport. I would stay in Rome.

Sorry to hear this. It looked so inviting, both the old city and the beach. Thanks for the advice though.

You don't mention whether you'll have a car. We did, so we spent the night in Ostia (the town) and drove to FCO the next morning to drop off the car and leave. It worked beautifully. There were even handy gas stations to fill up before dropping the car. The only problem was the weird traffic getting in to Ostia, with strange one-way arrangements (and we're used to one-way streets). Getting out in the morning was a snap.

I am traveling with teenage daughters that wanted to dip their toes into the Mediterranean at least once on our up-coming trip in June. We decided to spend one night in Ostia Lido before our flight. We plan on taking the metro/train from Rome to Ostia Lido early in the day. The girls can get a good half day of beach time. The next morning after checking out, we will store our luggage at the hotel then spend half the day visiting Ostia Antica. Back to the hotel to retrieve our luggage and catch a cab to the airport. I already inquired if the hotel can arrange a cab for us. Our flight is not until 10:00pm so we will have plenty of time to spare.
