We are finishing up a 2 week trip to Europe in April in Milan. We will get to Milan in early afternoon and stay overnight to catch a 10;20 flight from Malpensa. Any suggestions for sights to take in and convenient hotel in Milan? How long should we allow to get to the airport? On a post last year i read that HOtel Berna and Charly where good and that a visit to Sforza Castle and the Last Supper would be good. Any ideas? Thank you. [
Reservation is mandatory to see the Last Supper. Let us know if you want to know how to do that. Milan has two airports, if you're flying out of Malpensa, it's 30 miles northwest of city center, most travelers take the special bus from Milano Centrale train station, time after bus leaves the station is about an hour depending on time of day/traffic. Or there is a train to Malpensa, leaving from Cardona station.
Thanks Kent. I've got Steves book on Italy and I think it explains how to get tickets. We are flying out of Malpensa.
Pat,
I'll likely be making the same journey in June, so have done a bit of preliminary research on that subject.
I'm leaning towards using the rail link from Cardona station, but will decide between that and the shuttle when my planning gets a bit further along.
Cheers!
Hi Pat, The shuttle from the Milan Central train station is an easy option and it begins early in the morning. We stayed at Hotel Charly and Best Hotel and neither was great--but maybe o.k. for one night. It's difficult to find a good, inexpensive hotel near the train station.
Hotel Bern is great. It's walking distance from the train station, and walking distance to the Duomo/piazza. Sforza Castle is fun, and also walking distance.
Wander the side streets off the main piazza for great food/gelato. The department stores are fun to wander around too!
Take a tour of the Duomo, get onto the roof for some great views. See the Galleria, but expect high prices there. Spin on the toro's b-lls" for good luck!
you take a bus from the train station (on the right side as you are facing the front) to get to the airport. Takes about 30 min. Buy your tickets in the office by the buses.
UNA Hotel Century. We just stayed there for one night last October. It was great on location (walking distance from the train station), close to the underground train as well, breakfast was included and it was very good. Large rooms with nice size bathrooms. The room price was 104.55 euro a night for two. Hope this is helpful. We flew into Milan when we began our trip - the ride to the airport takes about an hour, then if your flying back to the states direct you likely need to be there at the airport 3 hours ahead, but if your flying from Milan then to Amsterdam, likely only need to be at the airport 2 hours ahead. Also, while in Milan you will want to go to the Duomo, it's a very quick train ride from this hotel we stayed at and that puts you at the main square. Lots of exploring and sites to see from that point. Also, regardin the Last Supper you need to make reservations I think about two-three months in advance. We were four people traveling together and tried about two months in advance and it was all booked for the one day we would be there.
Good Luck
