Overnight from Florence to Naples

My husband and I planned to travel overnight on Sept. 16 from Florence to Naples (from there we planned to catch the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento). We would prefer to leave out of the SMN station since we're staying in the center of the city.

When I looked at the Trenitalia timetable online it looks like the 23:13 train may be the only one that visits that station? (it's in red, so I'm assuming that's what that means?)

Also, when it arrives in Naples it comes into the Napoli Campi Flegrei station? I can't find any mention of that one in Rick's book.

I'd assumed that there would be an overnight train or two from city center to city center- piece of cake. I'm beginning to wonder if I made a mistake in not booking a hotel that night... Any clarifications or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Regional train 11737 begins its run at Firenze S. M. Novella, departing from there at 23:07 and from Firenze Rifredi at 23:13. The only stop ICN 761 makes in Naples is at Napoli Campi Flegrei.

However, you could leave Firenze Campo di Marte at 23:31, change in Caserta, and arrive at Napoli Centrale at 05:45.

You will be on night trains for parts of two runs mentioned above by Tim. If you plan on purchasing couchettes, you won't get more than 5hrs sleep in them. If you plan on purchasing regular seats and not the sleepers, you are going to want to protect your luggage. There are storage racks overhead that are not secure and if both of you are sound asleep, your luggage is vulnerable. Luggage theft on trains can happen. Best to place your luggage under your legs and sleep that way.

Thank you both for your responses- very helpful. Unfortunately, my research last night was in vain since I experienced the previously mentioned credit card issues. (Tried four different cards and none of them worked.) Guess I'll just have to buy them when we get there.

Amy, you might want to try www.italiarail.com. They are a ticket broker but not too bad. They specialize in city-to-city travel in Italy. I believe that they are based in the U.S. It's very easy to buy tickets from them. For night trains, I would suggest buuing as soon as you can as they do fill up their sleeper compartments.
