Overlooks for evening photo op's in Rome

Hello, what are some good lookout areas for evening photo ops and relaxing, maybe with locals etc. Also Im sorry but i cant remember the name of the building that is nicknamed the Typewriter? I hear that has a good view with an elevator lift.

Victor Emmanuel II Monument, also known as the "Wedding Cake".....also, be sure to climb the St. Peters Cupola (dome). There are beautiful views from there.

Rome is a beautifully lit up city after dark.. Unfortunately all the high views are closed before it gets dark..
The piazzas in the centre of Rome, piazza navona and campo de fiori are bustling with cafes and beautiful lit up fountains in case of the piazza navona. Even the Pantheon square looks more beautiful at night. We stayed close to the Pantheon thus putting all these places at walking distance.
The trevi fountain although crowded at night looks spectacular. But for a less crowded visit go early in the morning to have a quiet time at the fountains.
The Trajan's column and forum are also well lit up after dark and so is the St Peter s square and the Castel st Angelo close to the Vatican.
Even the Capitoline hill with its beautiful staircase and symmetrical buildings look beautiful at night and have the added bonus of views over the Roman forum.
I had a blast with night photos at Rome. You can see what I mean at my blog yogictravel. wordpress.com for photos of the same.
Have a great trip.

I had the same idea about sunset views from the Victor Emmanuel II monument. I was disappointed to find that the elevator and terrace closed well before sunset at the time of year we were there (late May).

Unfortunately, just as with St. Peter's dome, the terrace of the Vittoriano doesn't look to be open late enough for night photos in the summer. It looks like it closes at 7:30 PM. (Bryan, what month is your trip?)

I loved some of the photo ops from Ponte S. Angelo and Ponte Umberto I at night. And while these aren't city "overlooks", they might give you some ideas (not my shots; I wish they were!):

Terrazza del Pincio - above Piazza del Popolo - might be a likely spot.

While not as great as some of the monuments we took great photos an video from the roof top bar of our hotel near the Pantheon. So try your hotel roof if possible.

edit to add Piazza del Popolo for views and has a cab rank near by, which we will finally see this trip.

PIncio Hill, just east of Piazza del Popolo. You get the Piazza in the foreground, St. Peter's Dome on the horizon, and plenty of couples and other people enjoying it all with you.

Gianicolo! We meandered up the road, but I think there are stairs that can get you here. There is a wall that you can sit on and I recall some trucks selling snacks as well as a park that was really nice to get away from the hustle of the city. Then, you can walk down into Trastevere for a drink or dinner.

Bridges along the Tevere. Don't avoid the fountains and piazze; not overlooks, but beautifully lit monuments.

The view from Gianicolo was amazing and it seems like you can walk up there any time you like. It's just as pretty in the night as daytime and the fountain up there is a nice nighttime backdrop. Personally I love all Rome's monuments and the way they're lit at night, I can fill entire cameras with those. Nothing is more amazing than St. Peter's and the square dead in front of you at 4 am when there's not a soul in the world on the street except maybe your taxi. It's not an overlook, but it's not to miss. I would also agree with taking photos from the bridges, Ponte Sisto, the Bridge of Angels especially-that's pretty amazing.
